What Counts as a Garage Door Emergency?
Here’s the simple rule. If you can’t get your car out, or you can’t secure your house, it’s an emergency. Treat it like one.
Get help today if:
- Your car is trapped behind a door that won’t open.
- The door is stuck open and won’t come down.
- A spring snapped. You’ll usually hear a loud bang like a gunshot, and the door suddenly feels very heavy or the opener strains and stops.
- A cable is hanging loose on one side.
- The door sits crooked, or the rollers have come out of the track.
- The door won’t close and it’s getting dark.
It can usually wait for a scheduled visit if:
- The door is slow or noisy, but it opens and closes all the way.
- The keypad stopped working or needs keypad reprogramming.
- The bottom rubber or weather seal is cracked, flattened or letting in light. That’s a bottom seal replacement, not a rush job.
Not sure which list you’re on? Describe what you see and hear on the phone. A loud bang, a crooked door or a dangling cable tells us a lot before anyone shows up.
What to Do Safely Until We Arrive
Some things are safe: watching, unplugging the opener, and keeping people, pets and cars clear of the door. Some things are not: adjusting or unwinding springs, or loosening cable drums or brackets. Those parts hold a lot of stored tension, and they cause serious injuries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission garage door safety guidance and DASMA’s guidance on garage door springs both say the same thing: leave spring work to a trained tech.
Your car is trapped behind the door
Don’t try to muscle the door up by hand, and don’t keep hitting the opener button. With a broken spring, that door can weigh far more than you can safely hold, and it can come down fast. Unplug the opener and keep everyone clear. If getting the car out is urgent because of work, a medical appointment or a flight, say so on the call. For dire emergencies, we make arrangements to serve you.
The door is stuck open
Don’t force it down. First, look at the two small photo-eye safety sensors near the floor on each side of the door. Openers built to the UL 325 safety standard reverse if that beam is blocked, so a stray broom, box or bike tire can keep the door open. Clear it and try once. If it still won’t close, or it looks crooked, or a spring is broken, leave it alone. A door stuck open overnight is the classic same-day call. In the meantime, lock the inside door between the garage and the house.
A spring snapped: leave the red emergency release cord alone
That red handle feels like the obvious move. With a broken spring, it’s the wrong one. Pulling the release disconnects the door from the opener, and the spring is no longer helping hold the weight. An open door can slam shut. A closed door becomes far too heavy to lift safely. The release cord is meant for a power outage on a door with working springs. Springs wear out by cycles, every open and close, and many standard springs are rated for roughly 10,000 of them, so a snap is normal wear, not your fault. Our garage door spring replacement page explains what the fix involves.
A cable is hanging or the door is off its track
Stop using the door and unplug the opener. A door hanging crooked on one cable, or with rollers out of the track, can twist or drop further if it runs again. Don’t try to rethread the cable or bend the track back with a hammer. Instead, take a look and note what you see: cable loose on the left or right, rollers out of the track, a bent panel. That description makes the phone conversation fast and accurate.
How Fast We Get There on an Emergency Call
Same day garage door repair means something specific here. We prioritize same-day repairs, and we can often have it working the same day, whether that’s a snapped spring, a cable that’s let go, an opener that won’t respond, or a door that’s jumped its track. A job moves to the next day only if that day’s schedule is completely full. That’s the honest version.
What we will do is tell you where you stand on the schedule. And if it’s a dire emergency, like a trapped car you need for a hospital visit, tell us on the call. We make arrangements to serve you.
Openers are a big share of same-day calls too. A LiftMaster, Chamberlain or Genie unit that hums but won’t lift, or won’t respond at all, is often a fixable part rather than a whole new motor. Our garage door opener repair page covers what usually goes wrong.
Emergency garage door cable repair
A snapped or slipped lift cable can usually be fixed the same day. On an otherwise sound door, it’s a cable job, not a new door.
Here’s how the system works. Each side of the door has a steel cable running from the bottom bracket up to a drum on the spring shaft. When the door opens, the cable winds onto the drum. When it closes, it unwinds. If the tension is off, the cable can jump the drum, fray or snap.
Cables rarely fail alone. A worn spring changes the balance and puts uneven load on one side. A door that came off its track can pull a cable loose. That’s why garage door cable repair should always include a look at the springs, rollers, hinges and tracks. Fix the cable and ignore the cause, and you’ll be back where you started.
What Emergency Garage Door Repair Costs and How Our Pricing Works
Start with the number most people need. Spring replacement, the most common emergency, runs $190–$299.95. The service call fee is waived on repairs over $200.
Here’s how pricing works, in order:
- A phone diagnostic is typically free. Tell us what happened and we’ll help sort out what’s likely wrong.
- We price it in your garage. A bang and a heavy door can mean a spring, a cable, a track or an opener problem. Guessing on the phone leads to surprise totals, so we look at the door first.
- You see the price before any work starts. We don’t charge unless you want to proceed.
Price first. Then the wrench.
What moves the price:
- Which part failed. A torsion or extension spring, a lift cable, the track or the opener are all different jobs.
- Door size and weight. A heavy double door needs stronger springs than a single.
- One spring or two. Many doors run a pair, and when one breaks the other is usually close behind.
- Whether the parts are on the truck. Common sizes usually are. Unusual hardware may take longer to source.
Repair, Not Replace: The Emergency Upsell to Watch For
A snapped spring or a cable that let go on a sound door is a spring or cable repair. That’s it. If someone shows up to an emergency call and starts pushing a whole new door, that’s a red flag. Stressed homeowners with a trapped car are easy to upsell, and some companies count on it.
Springs and cables are wear parts. They’re built to be replaced over the life of a door. A dented panel or a loud bang doesn’t mean the door is done.
When a door truly is finished, rotted, badly bent or unsafe, we handle new garage door installation too, with quotes given in person. But an emergency visit is about getting your door working today. If you’re weighing a new door down the road, our guide to repair vs. replace costs lays out the numbers.
Emergency Repair Coverage: Boise and the Treasure Valley
We’re based in Boise and work in Meridian, Nampa, Eagle, Caldwell, Kuna, Star and Garden City on a regular schedule, not as occasional trips. Same-day priority applies across the whole area. You can see the full list of areas we serve across the Treasure Valley, or read more about us as a garage door company in Boise.
A few local patterns are worth knowing. Treasure Valley cold snaps are hard on springs, and a spring near the end of its life often gives out on a cold morning. Subdivision homes built in the 2000s through the 2020s in Meridian, Kuna, Star, Nampa and Caldwell commonly have builder-grade steel doors with the original springs and openers, many of them getting up there in cycles. Older homes on the Boise Bench and in Garden City often have older openers and extension-spring setups, which need their own care. Property managers with rentals near Boise State or on the Bench get the same same-day priority for a tenant’s door.
How to Judge Any Emergency Garage Door Company
Use this checklist even if you end up calling someone else:
- Does a real person answer the phone?
- Will they show you the price before any work starts?
- Do they publish any price range at all?
- What happens to the service call fee?
- Can they give you a license number you can use to verify their contractor registration with Idaho DOPL?
- Are they insured?
- Do they actually serve your town on a regular basis?
Our answers: a real person answers. You see the price in your garage before any work starts. Spring replacement runs $190–$299.95, and the service call fee is waived on repairs over $200. We hold Idaho contractor registration RCE# 8081607 and carry general liability and company vehicle insurance. We’re veteran-owned. Drew has 10 years of personal experience in the garage door trade. That’s his own time on doors; the company itself is newer, and we’d rather tell you that straight.
“Drew did an awesome job installing a new motor for my garage door! He was professional, friendly, and made the whole process easy. Everything is finally up and running perfectly. I really appreciate the great service and would definitely recommend Drew and Garage Door Repair Boise to anyone needing garage door work. Thanks again, Drew!” — Cindy Rodriguez
